Chapter 6: Teacher vs. Student

Kristi

Kristi lay awake in her instructor cabin at the academy, which was never a good thing the night before a new class arrived for orientation. She needed all her wits about her when the latest batch of recruits marched with their K9 partners inside her classroom.

But all she could think about was Axel and his kind, understanding eyes, teasing voice, and the emphatic way he’d called her his girl. Did this mean they were dating even though they’d agreed not to date? Gah! This is so confusing!

She rolled to her back with a huff and stared at the ceiling. Axel was so different from the other guys she’d dated — not that she dated often. He flirted, yeah, but he didn’t push. Or move too fast. Or get all handsy like so many guys did. And he hadn’t balked too loudly at her no kissing and no dating ground rules, though he seemed to be finding ways around them pretty quickly…

She slung a hand over her eyes, wondering what she should do about his invitation to go as his plus one to his sister’s upcoming birthday party — his unofficial sister. She could think of a half dozen really good reasons to say no, but that didn’t change the fact that she wanted to go.

Lord, give me wisdom! The truth was, Kristi was a coward. She was an exuberant, high-energy girl with an enormous capacity to love. It’s just that most people didn’t stick around very long after she opened her heart to them. The last nine years of her life had been one long string of losses — her parents, her grandfather, the bestie she’d lost in college to a brain tumor, and her grandmother wasn’t getting any younger. As for her boyfriends? They all found a reason to break up with her, eventually.

The research scientist she’d dated in college had been furious about her decision to switch gears and pursue a career in dog handling. He acted like she’d pulled some bait and switch thing on him. After their break-up was the really nice police officer she’d dated, until he realized she had no interest in staying home to start that perfect, white-picket-fence family with him. Then there was that sky-diver who’d attended DCSRA a few months ago — a real, no-strings-attached kind of guy. So much so that he’d disappeared off the face of the earth a few weeks after graduation. She hardly counted the other ones — the various blind dates she’d attended that rarely turned into a second date. She’d always blamed it on her nerdiness, but what it if was more than that? What if she just wasn’t cut out for a long-term relationship?

Which wasn’t much of a foundation on which to start something with Axel Hammerstone. She could think of far more cons than pros for dating him. For one thing, his new position as a firefighter/ENT was in Dallas, while her dream job was two-and-a-half hours south of there at the DCSRA.
